MUSIC AT ST MARY'S
Why music matters
Music is a way of recognising our thoughts and feelings. It can be a form of prayer. St Mary's music is not for the church alone: it is for everyone.
Music is at the heart of St Mary's
Music is at the heart of St Mary’s — it has an exceptional choir, which aspires to a professional level in terms of quality; an active program of music education; strong links within Scottish music culture; and a congregation that loves to worship through singing.

It is a part of a unique experience
People often comment that St Mary's music was one of the things that initially attracted them to the cathedral. The organ is essential for leadingand colouring that communal singing. Internationally recognised, the choir at St Mary's sings for regular broadcasts for BBC Radio as well as for occasional concerts. Three services every week are led by the organ. The current instrument restricts the choir’s development.

Commitment to music education
St Mary's is committed to music education. Adult choristers are trained in vocal technique, musicianship, sightreading, aural skills and musical styles. They receive training for the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) Voice for Life Awards: three of our adult choristers have recently received gold medals from the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM).

Music for young people
The children’s choir is inclusive and welcoming to all and has a widely diverse membership. There is no requirement for children to come from the congregation, or to attend services other than when they are singing. Over the years, the choir has won many awards at every level. The choir is trained by a professionally trained singing teacher and singer, completely free of charge. Teaching is positive and nurturing, aiming to teach not just musicianship and aural skills, but social and teamwork skills, with care for each other’s well-being at the heart of what it does.
